  • Measure the commutation loop with the snubber footprint in place.
  • Lock the ESR and ESL limits into the procurement spec.
  • Verify with double-pulse and burst tests at full load.

Abstract

The spike follows directly from the loop inductance:

V_spike = L_loop × dI/dt

An unmanaged spike drives the device outside its safe operating area. Cumulative avalanche stress then shortens the life of the part, or ends it on the first bad event.

2. Kernmechanismus

2.1 Extract the parasitic loop first

L_loop = L_pcb + L_cap_ESL + L_package

2.2 Size the capacitor for the voltage rise you accept

The capacitor absorbs the loop energy ½L·I² and stores it at a larger voltage:

C_s = L_loop × I_off² / ΔV²

where C_s is the snubber capacitance, L_loop the commutation loop inductance, I_off the current at switch-off, and ΔV the voltage rise you allow across the capacitor.

For 50 nH, 10 A and ΔV = 40 V, the value is 3.1 nF. The capacitor's own ESL must stay well below the loop, below 10 nH for a 50 nH loop, or the snubber path becomes a new spike source of its own.

2.3 Size the resistor at the damping target

The resistor sets the damping of the snubber loop:

R_s = √(L_total / C_s)

where R_s is the snubber resistance, L_total the loop inductance including the snubber path, and C_s the snubber capacitance.

ζ = R_s / (2 × √(L_total / C_s))

where ζ is the damping ratio of the snubber loop. R_s = √(L_total/C_s) gives ζ = 0.5, which is a first-peak overshoot of 16 %. Doubling the resistor reaches ζ = 1 and removes the overshoot at the cost of more loss.

P_R = ½ × C_s × ΔV² × f_sw

The snubber's own path inductance adds to the commutation loop, so the damping calculation must use L_total and not the loop alone. In a first prototype the snubber ESL plus 15 mm of routing adds 30 nH.

The capacitor ESR also damps. A high-ESR unit hides margin in the lab that disappears when a lower-ESR unit appears in production, so the ESR belongs in the calculation as a known number.

The resistor's parasitic inductance works against it. A wirewound part at 200 kHz can present more reactance than resistance, which turns the damper into an inductor. Low-ESL Class I ceramics with tanδ at or below 0.1 % and non-inductive thick-film or film resistors make the arithmetic valid.

RC-Snubber-Schleife mit eigener Pfadinduktivität S1 sees V_spike = L_loop × dI/dt = 50 V at 1 A/ns Zwischenkreis L_loop = 50 nH S1 1 A/ns R_s = 5.1 Ω for 80 nH C_s = 3.1 nF Der Snubber-Pfad fügt 30 nH hinzu: L_total 80 nH, ζ 0.5 → 0.39 First-peak overshoot grows from 16 % to 26 %, and the node rings at 40 MHz

Fig. 1 — The snubber branch carries its own 30 nH of path inductance on top of the 50 nH commutation loop, so R_s set from the loop alone under-damps the switch node.

3. Schwachstellen im Engineering

Pain Point 1: Undamped ringing because the snubber path was ignored

The damping ratio falls from 0.5 to 0.39 and the first-peak overshoot grows from 16 % to 26 %. The switch node rings at 40 MHz, and the extra energy lands on the device in the same way as the original spike.

Pain Point 2: The resistor burning at high repetition rate

P_R scales with f_sw. The same 3.1 nF snubber with a 40 V swing dissipates 0.25 W at 100 kHz, 0.5 W at 200 kHz and 0.74 W at 300 kHz.

A 1 W part that carries 0.25 W with a 4x margin sits at 0.74 W at the higher rate, which is inside the 2x derating that the design rule asks for only at 100 kHz. The resistor drifts, its value changes, and the damping moves with it.

Pain Point 3: Production ESR taking the damping away

The prototype used a capacitor with 0.5 Ω of ESR that damped the loop as a side effect. Production moved to a lower-ESR unit at 0.05 Ω, so the effective resistance dropped from 4 Ω to 3.55 Ω, the damping ratio fell from 0.39 to 0.35, and the overshoot grew from 26 % to 31 %.

Nothing in the capacitance or the voltage rating changed. The batch then rings in the field, weeks after shipment, and the fault looks like a quality problem in a part that meets its printed specification.

Pain Point 4: Snubber capacitor self-heating under repetitive pulse energy

In a 3.1 nF snubber on a 300 V stage, the capacitor sees a 260 V swing at each switching event. At 200 kHz a Class II part with a 1.5 % loss tangent dissipates 2 W inside the dielectric, and at 20 °C/W that is a 40 °C rise above ambient.

A Class I part with tanδ at or below 0.1 % dissipates 0.13 W in the same node and rises 2.7 °C. The Class II unit drifts in value as it heats, and it can fail short, which turns the snubber into the fault it was installed to prevent.

4. Entwurfsschritte

Strategie 1: Messen Sie die Schleife, bevor Sie etwas auswählen.

Measure L_loop on the shorted commutation loop with the snubber footprint already in place. A datasheet estimate for an unmeasured layout is not a design input, because the number feeds every other calculation in the chain.

Strategy 2: Select the capacitor for low ESL and low ESR

Choose a capacitor whose ESL stays below 20 % of L_loop and whose ESR is known and small. HVC N4700 Class I Keramik-Scheibenkondensatoren combine tanδ at or below 0.1 % with coaxial low-ESL construction, so the damping comes from the resistor you chose and not from the capacitor you happened to buy.

Strategy 3: Size from the measured loop and close the loop numerically

Compute C_s = L·I²/ΔV² and R_s = √(L_total/C_s) from the measured value, then simulate the network with the snubber parasitics included. Sweep R_s by ±30 % around the calculated point and keep the worst-case overshoot below 80 % of the device rating.

Compute P_R = ½·C_s·ΔV²·f_sw at the highest repetition rate the machine will run, then derate by 2x. Use a non-inductive Dickschichtwiderstand and give it its own airflow, because a resistor that heats the capacitor next to it changes the capacitance and the loss at the same time.

Strategie 5: Überprüfung mit Doppelimpuls- und Burst-Test

Run double-pulse tests at maximum current and burst tests at maximum repetition rate, and probe the switch node with a 500 MHz differential probe. Accept the design when the excursion stays below 80 % of the device rating and the ring amplitude falls below 5 % of the pulse amplitude within one period.

Strategy 6: Lock the BOM to the qualified ESR and ESL

Write the ESR and ESL limits into the procurement specification next to the capacitance and the voltage rating. A Folienkondensator substitution changes the damping the same way an ESR change does, and a schnelle Erholungsdiode with a different recovery time changes the current slope that the snubber has to absorb.

5. HVC capacitors for snubber co-design

A snubber is only as repeatable as the parasitics of its parts. HVC specifies the ESR and the ESL of its capacitors tightly enough to use them as design variables, and manufactures at its 6,000 m² owned factory in Dongguan across a voltage range from 1 kV to 100 kV.

Sechs Parameter, die hier von Bedeutung sind

  • Known, low ESR. A Class I N4700 dielectric with tanδ at or below 0.1 % keeps the capacitor's damping contribution small, so the resistor you chose sets the result.
  • Low ESL. Coaxial construction holds the capacitor ESL below 20 % of a typical 50 nH commutation loop, which keeps R_s = √(L_total/C_s) valid at 200 to 400 kHz.
  • Voltage coverage from 1 kV to 100 kV, so the DC-link stage and the Q-switch stage use one dielectric discipline and one set of ESR limits.
  • PD below 5 pC at rated voltage, so a high-voltage snubber absorbs the spike without injecting discharge noise into the node it protects.
  • Stable loss over temperature. A ±30 ppm/°C coefficient keeps the damping arithmetic unchanged from cold start to soak.

6. Häufig gestellte Fragen

Frage 1: Wie dimensioniere ich den Snubber-Kondensator?

From the energy the loop releases: C_s = L·I²/ΔV². For 50 nH, 10 A and a 40 V rise the answer is 3.1 nF. A larger ΔV allows a smaller capacitor and a smaller resistor loss.

Q3: What resistor power do I need?

P_R = ½·C_s·ΔV²·f_sw, at the highest switching frequency in the specification. A 3.1 nF snubber with a 40 V swing needs 0.25 W at 100 kHz and 0.74 W at 300 kHz, before the 2x derating.

Yes, and it hides margin. A 0.5 Ω ESR in the prototype added damping that a 0.05 Ω production part does not, which moved the overshoot from 26 % to 31 % with no change to the printed specification.

Q5: What heats the snubber capacitor?

Its own dielectric loss. In a 3.1 nF snubber at a 260 V swing and 200 kHz, a 1.5 % loss tangent dissipates 2 W and rises 40 °C at 20 °C/W, while a 0.1 % Class I part dissipates 0.13 W and rises 2.7 °C.

Q6: What proves the design holds in production?

Two records: the measured loop inductance with the snubber in place, and the ESR and ESL limits written into the procurement spec. Without both, the damping depends on which part the buyer selected that month.
